The Lady Spartans captured their sixth consecutive win on Thursday, defeating previously undefeated Akron Manchester 4-1 in impressive fashion.

Boardman has had its share of struggles this season when it comes to capitalizing with runners in scoring position, but the Spartans delivered timely hits when it mattered most.

Despite stranding the bases loaded in both the first and second innings, Boardman broke through in the third. With one out, Cherne ripped a double down the right field line, and Jocelynn Torres followed with a walk. Addie Kowacich then delivered the big blow, scorching a ball into the right-center gap for a two-run double to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

Lately, giving the Spartans’ pitching staff more than two runs has been more than enough — and Gabi Sferra made sure of it again. The ace was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on four hits and striking out eight.

Manchester answered in the top of the fourth, using a leadoff triple and an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Boardman responded with much-needed insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Addie Rudge led off with a double to left field and later advanced to third. She came home on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Torres, who later scored herself on Kowacich’s second double of the night.

Sferra earned her fifth win of the season in the circle as the Spartans improved to 6-1 on the year.

At the plate, Kowacich was outstanding, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Ellie Wymer showed tremendous patience, drawing three walks. Defensively, Boardman was sharp as well, highlighted by Addie Rudge throwing out one runner and picking off another in a rundown to help the Spartans escape trouble.

Boardman now goes from one tough test to another, traveling to perennial state power Walsh Jesuit High School on Friday for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.
